Position/Tension Upgrade to the Planer

Proper positioning and tensioning of the top feed rolls will improve the efficiency of the feed through on your planer. Too much tension causes the boards to be delayed while they overcome the excess pinching action of the roll, while too little does not give optimum traction. Position too high or too low has a similar result. With our system, position fine tuning can be done during production, just get it close when changing thickness, and fine tune while running. Other considerations are reduced product damage, reduced wear, pounding and maintenance expense. We have found that some planers have a poor design on cylinder location, it is very close to the pivot shaft, and we install our cylinders on the far side of the carrier opposite of the pivot shaft or overhead to use the mechanical leverage to your benefit. This also allows us to reduce the amount of tension pressure needed to feed your boards efficiently.

  • Electric Position/Tension

With our design we will be eliminating the side lift hydraulic position/tension system and installing our overhead servo controlled electric actuators and pneumatic tension/quick open. Included is the tower, mounts, trunnion mounts, actuator, 3000 RPM servo motor, power and encoder cables, 5” air cylinder with base end cushion, clevis mount, lifting arm, pins and air valve assembly. The required servo components are mounted in a free standing servo cabinet with a viewing window for drive status.

  • Hydraulic Position/Tension

Includes stacked cylinder assemblies mounted on the top roll carriers. Each cylinder assembly will include pin-mounting ears as a means of attachment at each end. We use hardened steel bushings on top, clevis mount on bottom and greasable pins on both ends. This upgrade allows the position of each top roll to be set independently for the board thickness. The tension/pressure is adjustable and also provides quick open for clearing the planer without disturbing the position settings. Normal tension pressures are between 200-300 pounds of pressure. All required hydraulic control valves are mounted on a common manifold. The manifold will be mounted on a frame with a junction box for wire termination.

  • Thin Board Control

Thin board control would give the ability to displace the position of the one top roll down approximately 3/8 inch to help feed a thin board that has stalled in the planer. Operation is from a switch on the planer console or a foot pedal located at the infeed. We normally install this function in one position on the infeed of the planer.

Position/Tension Upgrade to the Feed Table & Bridge

Proper position and tension is essential for optimum performance and efficiency of an infeed system. Too much tension causes the boards to be delayed while they overcome the excess pinching action of the roll, while too little does not give optimum traction. Position too high or too low has a similar result.

  • Electric Position/Tension

We use electric linear actuators in place of traditional hydraulic cylinders. Each actuator has an air cylinder to counterbalance the weight of each position. This will allow the pineapple roll and powered hold-downs to be precisely controlled to maintain consistent tension when boards are present and to be prepositioned for the incoming board when lumber is not present. The pineapples will follow the board contour and maintain constant contact, automatically compensating for thin boards or even mismanufactured lumber.
